Raise your hand if you have lived most of your life drinking coffee from the coffee pot, or even worse, a single-use coffee pod machine (think Keurig).

If that is you, I have some news. You are missing out on a world of flavor, creativity, and fun. For some, coffee is simply a utility, but for others like myself, it is a fun hobby (and in some cases, a passion) that allows you to bring joy to other people, refine your palate, and actually appreciate the drink that keeps you going.

Here are three things you need to get started:

1. Ditch the pre-ground coffee and buy a coffee grinder.

From now on, you need to buy whole bean coffee. As soon as coffee is ground, it starts to lose flavor. So those bags of pre-ground beans you buy are often stale by the time you put them in your coffee pot, and all that is left is dirty/muddy charcoal flavors and a little bit of caffeine. Of course, you can mask that flavor with cream and sugar, but…. you shouldn’t have to. There are affordable options for grinders such as this, or if you are willing to put a little elbow grease into it, this manual one here will cost you right around $20.

2. Get the equipment that works for you.
