What Exactly is Espresso?

Isn’t espresso just coffee? Yes. However, not all coffee is espresso.

By definition, “coffee” is a term used to describe the liquid extracted by running water through coffee beans. “Espresso” is simply one of many brewing methods used to extract coffee. If you think about all the different ways you can brew coffee — Keurig, coffee pot, pour-over, french press, cold brew, etc., espresso is just another way you can enjoy the delicious drink that keeps everyone moving.

Can I order a cup of espresso at my local coffee shop just like I would order a regular cup of coffee?

Yes, but understand what it is first! Espresso is a high-pressured, highly concentrated form of brewing that extracts between 1–3oz of liquid. So if you order a plain espresso, you will be getting a small drink that is often more acidic and boldly flavored than your normal 8–12oz cup of coffee. More often than not, when people want espresso in their drink, they will order Lattes and Cappuccinos. These drinks have espresso with varying amounts of steamed milk, and can also be accompanied by a flavored syrup.
